Welcome to For the Health of It, a playful and insightful exploration of our health. Enjoy light-hearted insights, activities, resources and a plain old ‘good read’ about the areas that comprise our health and well-being.

For the health of it – an expression that plays off an old cliché. While playful, health is a serious topic. Serious enough that we spend exorbitant amounts of time, energy and resources trying to attain and maintain good health. We do this because we’re told to, because we know it’s the right thing to do and because inherently we know that being healthy is the foundation of our lives — not to mention that it feels just plain great to be healthy, like a bit of heaven on earth. And who doesn’t want a slice heaven?!?!

Without your health, life isn’t very fun. It’s a struggle, harder than it already is, a constant upward climb. How amazing it feels to live with ease, to glide through your days handling the stresses and strains with grace. Can you just feel your shoulders relaxing and your breath slowing…? Can you picture this for yourself? How nice it is!

So back to playful… how ‘bout we take this serious topic of health and wellness and be a bit playful with it… just for the health of it … thinking of it as possibly a mechanism to be more healthy? Don’t we all love to play? Play doesn’t take a lot of energy. Playing is joyful. Playing is fun. Playing is what many of us look to find more of in our lives. Play isn’t work and to play, one doesn’t have to work at it. We’re all good at it… maybe too good at it.

So, won’t you join me in some play as together we explore our health in this online series, ‘For the health of it’ and follow me on Twitter to get tips, quips and tweets that make healthy living fun! We will explore a variety of topics that comprise our health and well-being including:

  • Mind Games (mind/body connection)
  • A Slice of Heaven (nutrition-focused)
  • Get a Leg Up (exercise, movement, and rest-focused)
  • Heaven and Health (spirituality)
  • Is Anyone Listening? Am I? (relationships and communication)
  • Smell the Roses (physical environment)
  • The Balancing Act (personal and professional growth)

These topics contain the seeds for some great playtime… as well as the potential for healthier living.

Rules of the game

There are no rules. Just play. Enjoy the time to just ‘be’. OK, one little rule (I look at it more as the prize) – take the time you deserve and need for some play in your busy day. Collect your winnings during and after each round of play…

During play:

  • Be mindful – aware, notice – what you are feeling, thinking.
  • Notice if you are focusing on the game or if your mind wondering about what you think you should be doing instead.

At the end of playing, ask yourself…

  • How did it feel to take this time to play?
  • What did you learn or insights did you have?
  • What will you do with that insight today, tomorrow, next week?

Let’s play!
